In observance of Veteran's Day, the Warren Twp Library will honor our veterans with this one hour presentation which will move the spirit with true accounts from those who served during and lived through WWII. Heartfelt letters, personal accounts, famous quotes, and songs of the era help us remember how the world fought for six long years. Men fought, loved, dreamed, and died all over the world. The words are authentic. The music pays tribute to the courage and soul of a great generation.

Presented by the Traveling Literary Theater company. Two professional actors will do the readings and in between readings, singer Maggie Worsdale will sing famous songs from that time. This performance is geared toward adults only.

#Antiques Appraisal @ Warren Twp Library on Saturday 10/22 @ 1pm

Do you want to find out whether that clock passed down from your great-grandfather is really an expensive antique? Or maybe you have some memorabilia that you think could be valuable.

Well, take a closer look at the items on your shelves and dig around your basements, then bring them to the Warren Township Library this Saturday. Expert appraiser, Alan Snyder, is donating his services for a special Antiques Appraisal from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. to raise money for the Friends of the Library. Registration is required and can be done online or by calling 908-754-5554, ext. 64.

A contribution of at least $5 per person is requested.

Snyder, of A.G. Snyder and Associates in Watchung, has been in the appraisal business for more than 33 years and has seen a variety of items with diverse stories.

One of the most valuable pieces Snyder has seen was a bronze container that looked like a planter and was actually used as one. Snyder said it's sides were adorned with Tiffany glass and the item was so rare that he could only advise the man, whose family had owned the container for many years, that it was worth several thousand dollars. Snyder said he later learned that the early 1900s planter had sold at an auction for $35,000.

"It's all interesting," said Snyder, who has done appraisals for other libraries and organizations. "You just don't know what turns up. And there are still plenty of things in people's houses that they are overlooking."

One of the more unusual items Snyder has seen was a wooden suitcase that contained a salesman's assortment of early light bulbs.

"I had never seen something like this before," recalled Snyder. "You just can't put a price on it because I had nothing to compare it to. That was an interesting piece."

Even when he can't give someone an estimate, Snyder said he can at least tell people whether something is valuable or should be researched further.

Snyder said the marketplace has changed drastically in recent years. He said so-called "traditional antiques" have fallen out of favor while items we tossed in the garbage 10 and 15 years ago have become sought-after collectibles.

"That is the era most buyers can relate to," he said. "It's a different attitude towards antiques and collectibles."

However, you just never know what could turn out to be valuable, which is why appraisal events like this one are very helpful, said Snyder.

"People can't believe that some of the items they consider junk that anyone would pay money for it," he said.

A great example was a set of nail kegs that someone brought in. These would normally sell for a few bucks at a hardware store, said Snyder, but someone had painted them with a patriotic motif.

"It made it into folk art," said Snyder of the kegs that sold for $150.

Snyder said he became interested in antiques when he was 11 years old and helped a neighbor clean out the basement. His neighbor gave him an old meat grinder that had been uncovered and he took it to the local antique store to see whether it was valuable. The meat grinder wasn't really worth, much but he became fascinated while exploring the shop that was crowded with an assortment of items.

"It was a great treasure hunt and that's what got me hooked," he said.

Today, it's still the hunt and helping people discover a hidden gem that captivates him.

"The pleasure I get is just seeing these things," Snyder said. "For me, that's just as much of a pleasure as owning it."

Sir Alfred Hitchcock directed over 60 films spanning more than half a century. With a distinctive style, both in front and behind the camera, his movies have influenced generations of filmmakers. Watching classic scenes from 'Rear Window', 'North by Northwest', 'Psycho', and 'The Birds' we discover what made Hitchcock, 'the master of suspense'.

Chris Messineo, from the NJ Film School will present this program, to kick-off our 'mystery' Halloween month. Mr. Messineo is an award-winning filmmaker, a fanatical student of cinema, and an accomplished lecturer. Sharing scenes from classic films and anecdotes about the making of them, Chris dissects the work of the master with wit and insight into the craft of filmmaking.

Scholarship Award winner @ Warren Twp Library

Geraldine Callegari, circulation clerk at the Warren Twp Library, was chosen by the Friends of the Warren Twp Library to receive the 2011 Scholarship Award. The presentation of the award took place on June 28 at the library.

When she presented the award, Carol Senff, president of the Friends of the Library, indicated that the Friends were happy to support Geraldine's efforts as she pursues a college degree.
Ms. Callegari is a junior at Kean University, where she is studying graphic design. In May, the Kean University Chapter of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi awarded Geraldine second place for Undergraduate Term Paper for her essay entitled "The Image of Love".
Geraldine joined the circulation staff of the Warren Twp Library in 2009.

Do you have a goal that you just can't seem to accomplish? Or perhaps there's a lifelong dream that you hope will one day be fulfilled?

Then you might want to join lifestyle coach Carla Hugo at the Warren Township Library at 1 p.m. on June 25 to learn how to transform your goals and dreams into reality. As featured on Oprah and in the bestseller "The Secret," Hugo will use a Vision Board to guide attendees.

"A vision board is a tool to help people manifest what their objectives are," said Hugo. "It's really simple, it's really low-tech. Anyone can do it.

Hugo, a lifestyle coach since 1997, founded her Get Coached business and website after 15 years in corporate recruiting, retention and market development. As an Integrated Lifestyle Coach, she works with clients on various issues including parenting, relationships and general wellness in addition to sharing her knowledge through her blog and local workshops.

As part of the Warren Library's Saturday workshop, Hugo will show people how to create a Vision Board, with the first step being to identify the things you don't want, which will lead to a discovery of the things you really do want.

"Generally we all have a long list of what we don't want," she said.

Then attendees will create a list of affirmations based on what they want and use that to identify pictures and words that resonate with them to be placed on the vision board. While Hugo typically has clients create their own board, on Saturday the group will create one board together to learn how they can create their own board at home.

"It's arts and crafts," joked Hugo, but the concept goes beyond simply cutting and pasting pretty pictures on a board.

Hugo said the Vision Board is based on the reticular activating system in one's brain, which simply put, is "when we see something it creates an imprint of it and it forces us to notice things more."

Hugo has experienced the success of Vision Boards among her clients and even in her own life. She created a Vision Board when she and her 10-year-old daughter seemed to be arguing more, particularly about healthy eating habits. She found pictures of mothers and daughters interacting in positive ways as well as photos demonstrating healthy eating and explained to her daughter why she made the board. Within a week, their relationship and communication had improved.

Hugo said helping people learn how to create a successful Vision Board also is about teaching them how to create new thought patterns and using positive images and associations to achieve your goals. For example, instead of using a phrase such as "conquer cancer," which would conjure up negative images, the phrase "live healthy" would be more suitable.

When setting goals, people often say things such as "I want," which suggests a lack of something and eventually leads to negative thoughts instead of positive ones. Instead of saying "I want to lose weight" or "I want to be healthy," she said the appropriate approach would be to say "I am fit and healthy."

Once the Vision Board is complete, Hugo said it should be placed in a prominent spot as a reminder but it should also be relocated occasionally so it doesn't become part of the scenery. And the board can evolve to reflect changes in your goal over time, because ultimately it's about giving you the mindset to bring those dreams to life.

"Act as if you have what you want," said Hugo. "You have a dream. Go for it. There's nothing to hold you back."

More Details of the Book Tour

Thank you all, for your good wishes about the book tour. It's always a bit hard to know how many details are too many about my book promotion, because the main focus of this blog is "About Amish," at least what I know about it having grown on in an Amish community. But your comments have inspired

Wednesday night we had our largest crowd for the week, at the Warren Township Library. Marcela Dunham contacted me through Lynn Kimmerle some months ago, and she did a phenomenal job of promoting this event, so that she ended up with a full house (67 people). I was very impressed with Marcela's dedication, especially when she said she was going to call everyone on her sign-up list, to let them know that there were people on a waiting list to get in and that if they were not coming, to let her know. She had also been proactive in letting me know what she thought her patrons would want to know about, so I tailored my talk to include the topics she suggested. Judging by the comments and questions people asked, she was a good judge of what her patrons like. To add to her dedication, Marcela sent me an email with feedback and pictures. Below is a photo that shows a large part of the audience.

Marcela kindly wrote: "Our patrons at the Warren Library enjoyed your talk tremendously, and are still talking about it. Apparently some people congregated outside the library after your talk, still discussing the information you provided. It was informative and fascinating. Since then, every time I meet one of the attendees they tell me that it was one of my best programs!!"

This power-point slide and demonstration lecture will take you through the ups and downs of the highest styles of the 18th century. From the courtiers of the Sun King, to the American patriot, the developments of fashion tell much about the revolutionary times they lived through. The lecture includes over 100 images and 4 changes of costume.

Performer's Bio: Pat Sanftner has her Master of fine arts from NYU School of the Arts, where she studied Theatrical design, in particular, costume design. For the last thirty years she has made her living working on Broadway in television and film. For almost a decade, she has been a professor at Marymount Manhattan College where she teaches the next generation of young designers.

Madison String Quartet to perform @ Warren Library on Saturday

Madison String Quartet performs “From Russia to Rio” at Warren Twp Library @ 2 PM on Saturday, May 14.

The Madison String Quartet, praised for its energetic performances and inventive programming, draws on the international experience of its members. The Quartet has carved a niche out for themselves by exploring Hispanic composers little known to American audiences. The Quartet will perform an eclectic program of music ranging from Tchaikovsky to Brazilian composer Villa Lobos, and will also include pieces by composers from Uruguay and Venezuela.

Violinist Evelyn Estava has earned recognition as one of the top performing artists in her native Venezuela. She will play as featured soloist with the Central Jersey Symphony a week before the library concert. Husband Michael Avagliano frequently performs with several orchestras in the region, including the Westfield Symphony, and the Princeton Pro Musica. Violinist Gabriela Rengel, also a native from Venezuela, performs as soloist and as a member of the Albany Symphony Orchestra since 2005. Cellist Gerall Hieser has been a member of the Gabriel Piano Quartet for 11 years, the Westfield symphony, and is an affiliate artist at Drew University.

The Quartet’s 2004 recording, Life is a Dream, was received with rave reviews, and displays the eclectic programming that has become its hallmark.

Warren Library participated in Earth Day Event

It was a cold and blustery morning on Saturday, April 16. But that did not dampen the spirits of the Warren Library staff lead by its director, Elaine Whiting. The Library joined the Warren Green Team in their effort to highlight “green” initiatives in the community. The Library put together an impressive exhibit, gave out free books, reusable shopping bags and insulated mugs. Prototypes of crafts made with discarded books were in display, as well as brochures with ideas for turning old books into practical objects for the home. In spite of the frigid temperature, the Library staff braved the elements with their usual friendly and “warm” manner.

April of 2011 marks the 150th anniversary of the beginning of the Civil War. On Saturday, April 9 at 2 pm, the Warren Twp Library will present another Musical Saturday @ your library with a historical flair. Musicians Lisa Godino and Chuck Winch will dress in 19th century attire and play on period instruments for this musical performance of both authentic Civil War era songs and original compositions to explore how popular songs shaped and reflected the sentiments and events of the time. #Vastu Home Design

The Warren Twp Library presents "Vastu Home Design" with interior designer Genevieve Mc.Dermott who will give an introduction to Vastu design.Vastu is the ancient Indian tradition of architecture, a system of design whose purpose is to promote well-being by constructing spaces in harmony with the five elements of nature: earth, water, air, fire and space. Together they work to bring health, wealth, prosperity and happiness. Some of the points that will be addressed in this presentation are: rules of Vastu, elements of design, the use of color and art and how to arrange rooms according to Vastu. Participants will be encouraged to work on their house plans with furniture placement and room color to achieve these states of well being.

Speaker's Bio: Genevieve Mc.Dermott is a graduate of Parsons School of Design. She studied furniture and design at Winterthur Museum and have lectured in Vastu design in the United States and Canada. She is an allied member of the American Society of Interior Designers.

The Chopsticks-Fork Principle on Tuesday 2/8 @ 7 pm

We celebrate Chinese culture during the New Year's celebrations week with an entertaining talk by author Cathy Bao Bean.

With good humor participants are encouraged to realize and understand (and laugh about!) how we are all at least bi-cultural (by ethnicity, gender, etc.) in a way that shatters stereotypes but explains the generalizations. The 'chopstick-fork' principle highlights Ms. Bao Bean experience as a Chinese-American who then raised an American-Chinese child.

This program is funded by the Horizons Speakers Bureau of the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

#Chair Yoga teacher Jillian Keller is a Star @ Warren Library

Jillian Keller has been teaching a seated yoga class called “Relax, Renew & Rejuvenate” for the past three years at the Warren Twp Library. Her calm and peaceful demeanor has gained her many fans at the library. Jillian has developed quite a following, and her classes are always full, and a waiting list is drawn for most of her programs. After a short break for the holidays, Jillian will be back on January 13 at the Warren Library for her twice monthly classes.

Jillian took some time off her busy schedule to talk with us about her experience as a yoga teacher. Jillian got her yoga certification at The American Yoga Academy, and she is constantly trying to further her knowledge by attending seminars on topics such as “Mindfulness Yoga”, “Detox Flow” and Kripalu Yoga Dance. Besides teaching at the Warren Library, Jillian Keller also teaches at the Sunrise Assisted Living Facility. Jillian told us how rewarding it is for her to teach at the library, as she enjoys observing the change in her students from the moment they enter the class and how rejuvenated and de-stressed they feel and look at the end of the session. She thinks that seniors are somewhat hesitant to try yoga, as they might not be as flexible. However the chair yoga that Jillian teaches is the answer for them. While doing adaptive poses, supported by a chair, the participants can still receive yoga’s healing and restorative benefits. Jillian thinks that no one can escape anxiety and stress in today’s world. So she is happy to provide an hour of peace for her students at the Warren Library.

Jillian Keller thoroughly enjoys teaching at the library. She said: “I always receive a warm welcome when I come in and it is a pleasure to teach in such a nice setting. The library offers so many excellent programs, and a lot of the presentations deal with health, fitness and wellness in general. I think it is wonderful place to visit, as the staff is just outstanding.”

It is that time of the year again! After watching the Times Square countdown, for millions of people it is time to formulate those New Year’s Resolutions. However, according to research, 25 percent of all resolutions will be abandoned after only one week. How do you make your New Year’s resolutions actually stick? The Warren Twp Library has planned a series of programs related to popular resolutions: losing weight, improving your health and your memory, getting organized and clearing the clutter from your home, etc.

Winter Wonderland with a Touch of Mozart @ Warren Library

Old Bernardsville Library - haunted by Phyllis who now has her own library card. Apparitions have been seen in this building, which was formerly an Inn and Tavern during Revolutionary times.

Guggenheim Memorial Library - West Long Branch's Monmouth University houses its haunted library in the former estate summer home of Murry Guggenheim. A lady dressed in white has been seen on the staircase at night.

Raritan Public Library - located in the former house of General John Frelinghuysen, this library hosts ghosts who turn on lights and move books. An older woman has also been spotted in the garden and a window.

Vintage Music from the 1920's to th 1940's on Saturday, September 25 @ 2 pm

On Saturday, September 25 @ 2pm, we kick-off our fall “Musical Saturdays @ the library” with a Vintage Music Concert. Vintage guitarist Ken Lelen will sing ragtime, jazz and swing tunes from the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s, and will pair each song with a guitar from the same era. Each guitar makes music that is striking for its tone, character and sustain without the use of pick-ups or electronic gimmicks. Filled with memorable melodies, clever lyrics and amusing anecdotes, his concerts are popular with diverse groups. Mr. Lelen will be joined by bassist Matt Koch who will provide the rhythmic heart to the performance. Given their mutual affinity for the amiable tunes and beguiling sentiments of the Great American Songbook, concerts by the Ken Lelen Combo are noted for their upbeat, acoustic renditions of ragtime, jazz and swing classics.

Harvest Moon

The definition of a Harvest Moon is: the full moon closest to the fall equinox. The Harvest Moon was thus named because it rises within a half-hour of when the sun sets. In early days, when farmers had no tractors, it was essential that they work by the light of the moon to bring in the harvest. This moon is the fullest moon of the year. When you gaze at it, it looks very large and gives a lot of light throughout the entire night. No other lunar spectacle is as awesome as the Harvest Moon.

The Harvest Moon usually appears in the month of September. However, on occasion, it appears as a full moon early in October. This is the case this year, when the full moon closest to the autumn equinox will appear in the night sky on October 2nd.

The Harvest Moon, when it falls in September, is also known as the "Fruit Moon." When it falls in October, it is sometimes called the "Hunter’s Moon." This is because October is the month when large animals, such a deer and moose are hunted for the winter’s meat supply. If taken before that time, it is said that the meat will taste wild or "strong." Hunting animals before the "Hunter’s Moon," also interferes with the rut.

The Harvest Moon rises as the sun sets. This occurs only in the Northern Hemisphere. This early rising and extra light allowed farmers to work long into the night in order to bring in the year’s harvest. In the Southern Hemisphere, the exact opposite occurs. There is a longer period of time between sunset and the rising of the moon. The south does not require the extra time to harvest the crops. In the north, if the crops are not taken in, they will be destroyed by frost, which can hit anytime during September or October. It is usually safe to assume there will be no frost, or only a light frost, before the Harvest Moon.

The Harvest Moon always hangs low in the sky. It seems to be larger and more beautiful than other full moons and often has an orange or pink cast. The reason for this is African dust storms and North American wildfires, which have filled the atmosphere with aerosols.

The human eye sees a low hanging moon as being larger than one that rides high in the sky. This is known as a “Moon Illusion,” because, in reality, the moon is always the same size.

How to Get Your Child Ready for Back To School

1)It's that time of year once again, a time when parents rejoice and kids groan. That's right - it's back to school time. But before you breakout the backpacks and the pencils, ask yourself this question - are you and your child fully prepared for the year ahead? Here's how to get you and your child ready for back-to-school.

2)Find out about your child's school - Whether your child is returning to the same school or starting at a new one, it's always a good idea to get the lowdown on any changes at the school. Is there a new principal? Who are your child's teachers? What's going on with the curriculum? What tests will be administered to your child? As most school districts start in September, schools tend to be open a month before. You can call the school directly and speak with an administrator or visit the school for information.

3)Get your child into the back-to-school routine - During the summer, staying up late and sleeping in are the norm. But as the start of school draws near, children need to get back into a routine. About three weeks before school starts, have your child go to bed 15 minutes earlier at night and get up 15 minutes earlier in the morning. When school is two weeks away, have your child go to bed 30 minutes earlier at night and get up thirty minutes earlier in the morning. When your child is about to start school in a week, have him go to bed an hour earlier at night and get up an hour earlier in the morning. By developing a bedtime routine, your child will be less resistant to the early morning wake-up calls to get ready for school. In addition, if you're not already doing this, have your child lay out his clothes before he goes to bed. That will teach him to get organized and be prepared in case you are running late in the morning.

4)Go over the three R's - Regardless if you're a teacher or not, we all have knowledge to pass on to our kids. What were your strengths in school? Reading? Writing? Science? Math? Whatever your favorite subject, use what you've learned in school and in life to go over some of the basics with your child. In essence, you can "play" school with your child. It should be in a room without distractions (i.e. no TV or video games) and geared towards learning (i.e. den, family library or home office). A run through of the basics should take no more than 30 minutes to an hour and should be done 2-3 times a week. This is an excellent opportunity to see where your child needs help and to pass that information on to his teachers.

5)Prepare the supplies - Depending on your child's grade level (K0-12), the type of supplies needed will vary. Some schools sends a list out a couple of weeks before the school year. If no such list is provided, what your child needs for school can be determined by a trip to OfficeMax, Staples or Wal-mart. Every August, those stores provide free school supply lists for their customers. They're pretty concise and arranged by grade level. You can again contact the school directly to see what supplied your child will need.

6)Plan to meet and greet - The first day of school has arrived. This is a big day for you and your child. This is the time to go with your child on his first day and introduce yourself to the teachers. As your child settles into his classroom, you can have a quick sidebar with the teacher to find out who he is and what he's planning to teach your child. Be sure to exchange contact information with the teacher. The teacher should provide you with a copy of a lesson plan or syllabus that gives you the gist of what will be taught in class. Don't be afraid to ask questions of everyone you meet. You and the teachers should work together for the benefit of your child.

Nominate a Warren Library librarian for "I Love My Librarian" award

Librarians in our nation’s 123,000 libraries make a difference in the lives of millions of people every day. If a librarian has made a difference in your life, now is the chance to tell your story.
The Carnegie Corporation of New York/New York Times I Love My Librarian Award encourages library users to recognize the accomplishments of librarians in public, school, college, community college and university libraries for their efforts to improve the lives of people in their community.

Nominations will be open from August 2 to September 20.

Up to 10 librarians in public, school and college, community college and university libraries will be selected to win $5,000 and will be honored at a ceremony and reception in New York, hosted by The New York Times. In addition, a plaque will be given to each award winner’s library. Winners will be announced in December 2010.

Each nominee must be a librarian with a master’s degree from a program accredited by the ALA in library and information studies or a master’s degree with a specialty in school library media from an educational unit accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education. Nominees must be currently working in the United States in a public library, a library at an accredited two- or four-year college or university or at an accredited K-12 school.

There’s always a weekend when it hits me. It’s usually mid-August. It’s usually hot. And the cicadas are singing like there’s no tomorrow. I wake up and realize, “Ohmigod! Summer’s almost over!”

If you’re at all like me – you still want to live summer to the fullest! Here are 22 ideas for how to be more present to this amazing time of the year when summer turns its volume up right before disappearing into cool thin air.

1 – Wake Up Early

The days are still lighter longer, so it’s the perfect chance to wake up and be present to the sunrise. Take a walk in the early hours while it’s still cool outside. Don’t forget to bring your dog!

2 – Create the Ultimate Summer Song Playlist

Visit iTunes and download 20 of your favorite summer happy songs, and take a sunset drive with the windows down. Sing loud!

3 – Get a Last-Minute Beach Deal

If you don’t have kids who are heading back to school, it’s a great time to find deals at the beach! Plus, it’s a quiet and peaceful time to be on the shore.

4 – Listen Up

Depending on where you live, the end of the summer is a feast of healing sounds for your ears. Cicadas, tree frogs, wood thrush and songbirds – to name a few. Take some time to sit still and listen. Pure attention is creativity at its finest.

5 – Visit your Local Tailgate Market

I often wish I still had my organic garden. I loved growing my own vegetables. But the truth is, I don’t have the time (or sunlight!) to create a thriving garden. This is why I’m so happy to visit the local tailgate market this time of year. This is when harvest is at its most decadent. Stretch yourself and purchase a few new veggies you’ve never eaten before!

6 – Catch an Outdoor Concert

Some of my very best concert memories are from the many concerts I’ve seen while sitting on a blanket in the grass. From Latin to Lillith, from ballet to Buffett – outdoor performances are a renewal for your soul.

7 – Fire Up the Pit

If the nights are getting cooler in your area, it’s a great time to light up a fire and have friends over for some intimate conversation by the outdoor fire pit or chiminea.

8 – Call in Lazy

Okay, I’ll go ahead and admit it. When I had a “real” job, I called in lazy a few times. (Of course, I never actually used those words!) My friend Diane and I would sometimes call in lazy together and use those days to drive to the Chesapeake Bay for a quick getaway from our city lives. Take off for a day of total summer immersion. Don’t wait til you’re sick to pamper yourself!

9 – Outside More than Inside

Sometimes I present myself with the following weekend challenge: Be outside more hours than inside. (In fact, as I write this, I’m sitting by the falls on the river.) Nature revives us. Our bodies get in tune and in touch when we surround ourselves with the natural rhythms of the earth. Challenge yourself to see how much time you can spend outside!

10 – Catch a Great Summer Movie

Talk to me all you want about Netflix – but there’s something special about going to a theater and seeing a movie on the big screen. There’s always a few good summer movies in each genre – so don’t wait for the DVD! Experience a fun evening out!

11 – Watch the sun set

One of my mantras is this: “Above all – reverence.” One of my favorite ways to experience the awe and wonder of life is to sit quietly and watch a sunset. It’s free. It’s easy. And there are always lots of great spots in any city or region to make an occasion out of it.

12 – Slice a tomato.

The end of summer is tomato time! My favorites are the big purple red heirloom tomatoes – not just because they taste so good, but because they are so completely beautiful when you slice into them. Each one is a work of art. Slice a tomato, cover it with fresh dill, and a little bit of salt. Enjoy!

13 – Go ahead. Get trashy.

There’s nothing better than indulging in that slightly embarrassing book you’ve been meaning to read. Don’t worry about hiding the cover behind a National Geographic magazine. Just enjoy it!

14 – Shed the Excess

The heat of summer is a great excuse to get rid of the excess. If you’re weighed down by lots of clutter and stuff you don’t use, toss open your windows, crank up the music and de-clutter. You’ll feel so much lighter when fall arrives.

15 – Dig in the Dirt

If you have a garden, it’s a great time to divide your plants, add some compost, mulch it up, and gather seeds. In my shade garden, it’s time to divide the hostas! Just plunging your hands into the earth will awaken your heart to what’s real!

16 – Go for Gazpacho!

If you haven’t done it yet, this is the best time to make gazpacho soup. It’s healthy, and it uses all the ingredients readily available in abundance right now.

17 – Take an After-Dinner Walk

Before you know it, it’ll be dark outside as you make your dinner. Take advantage of these last days of late sun – and take a simple quiet walk after dinner.

18 – Swing on a swing.

Swinging is the happiest activity in the world. All you have to do is keep your eyes on the lookout for a great swing – in a park, on a tree by the river, at a local farm. Don’t roll your eyes! Get out there and swing. Your mood will thank you!

19 – Adopt a pet.

One of my favorite blogs is A Way to Garden. Margaret Roach is the coolest smartest woo-woo garden blogger out there. 21 – Make Pesto

Basil is, quite simply, the best thing EVER. Or maybe pesto is. I can never really decide. Anyway, pesto is heaven. You can find many great recipes on the web. Or, do like I do, and use your intuition. Either way, pesto will keep you happy through the winter – and it makes a great gift for your friends and neighbors! (And by the way, you can make an awesome vegan pesto too. The cheese is totally optional!)

U.S. public libraries: We lose them at our peril.

The following article, written by Marilyn Johnson, was published on July 6th by the Los Angeles Times. Marilyn Johnson is the author of, most recently, "This Book is Overdue".

The U.S. is beginning an interesting experiment in democracy: We're cutting public library funds, shrinking our public and school libraries, and in some places, shutting them altogether.

These actions have nothing to do with whether the libraries are any good or whether the staff provides useful service to the community. This country's largest circulating library, in Queens, N.Y., was named the best system in the U.S. last year by Library Journal. Its budget is due to shrink by a third. Los Angeles libraries are being slashed, and beginning this week, the doors will be locked two days a week and at least 100 jobs cut. And until it got a six-month reprieve June 23, Siskiyou County almost became California's only county without a public library. Such cuts and close calls are happening across the country. We won't miss a third of our librarians and branch libraries the way we'd miss a third of our firefighters and firehouses, the rationale goes … but I wonder.
I've spent four years following librarians as they deal with the tremendous increase in information and the many ways we receive it. They've been adapting as capably as any profession, managing our public computers and serving growing numbers of patrons, but it seems that their work has been all but invisible to those in power. I've talked to librarians whose jobs have expanded with the demand for computers and training, and because so many other government services are being cut. The people left in the lurch have looked to the library, where kind, knowledgeable professionals help them navigate the government bureaucracy, apply for benefits, access social services. Public officials will tell you they love libraries and are committed to them; they just don't believe they constitute a "core" service.
But if you visit public libraries, you will see an essential service in action, as librarians help people who don't have other ways to get online, can't get the answers they urgently need, or simply need a safe place to bring their children. I've stood in the parking lot of the Topeka and Shawnee County Library in Kansas on a Sunday morning and watched families pour through doors and head in all directions to do homework or genealogical research, attend computer classes, read the newspapers. I've stood outside New York city libraries with other self-employed people, waiting for the doors to open and give us access to the computers and a warm and affordable place to work. I've met librarians who serve as interpreters and guides to communities of cancer survivors, Polish-speaking citizens, teenage filmmakers, veterans.
The people who welcome us to the library are idealists, who believe that accurate information leads to good decisions and that exposure to the intellectual riches of civilization leads to a better world. The next Abraham Lincoln could be sitting in their library, teaching himself all he needs to know to save the country. While they help us get online, employed and informed, librarians don't try to sell us anything. Nor do they turn around and broadcast our problems, send us spam or keep a record of our interests and needs, because no matter how savvy this profession is at navigating the online world, it clings to that old-fashioned value, privacy. (A profession dedicated to privacy in charge of our public computers? That's brilliant.) They represent the best civic value out there, an army of resourceful workers that can help us compete in the world.
But instead of putting such conscientious, economical and service-oriented professionals to work helping us, we're handing them pink slips. The school libraries and public libraries in which we've invested decades and even centuries of resources will disappear unless we fight for them. The communities that treasure and support their libraries will have an undeniable competitive advantage. Those that don't will watch in envy as the Darien Library in Connecticut hosts networking breakfasts for its out-of-work patrons, and the tiny Gilpin County Public Library in Colorado beckons patrons with a sign that promises "Free coffee, Internet, notary, phone, smiles, restrooms and ideas."
Those lucky enough to live in those towns, or those who own computers, or have high-speed Internet service and on-call technical assistance, will not notice the effects of a diminished public library system — not at first. Whizzes who can whittle down 15 million hits on a Google search to find the useful and accurate bits of info, and those able to buy any book or article or film they want, will escape the immediate consequences of these cuts.
Those in cities that haven't preserved their libraries, those less fortunate and baffled by technology, and our children will be the first to suffer. But sooner or later, we'll all feel the loss as one of the most effective levelers of privilege and avenues of reinvention — one of the great engines of democracy — begins to disappear.

Mockingjay: The last book in The Hunger Games trilogy to be released next month

Heatwave!!

A HEALTH warning has been issued by doctors urging people to take precautions as temperatures are set to remain high going into the weekend.

There are a number of ways to prevent overheating and protect yourself and others from heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Here are some recommendations to follow during the next few days:

*Schedule outdoor activities for early morning or early evening.

*Take regular breaks in shady areas or indoors so that your body's thermostat has a chance to recover.

*Avoid direct sunlight whenever possible. Always use sunscreen to reduce the heat your body absorbs and to limit moisture loss. Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing and a wide-brimmed hat. People who work in the sun should take frequent breaks and not push themselves too hard.

*Drink plenty of fluids and don't wait until you're thirsty to drink. If you're doing heavy exercise in the heat, drink two to four glasses of cool fluids each hour. Even when you're swimming, you need to drink plenty of water.

*Don't eat a heavy or hot meal before going outside in hot weather. Doing so will heat your body faster.

*Avoid liquids that contain alcohol or large amounts of sugar -- they may cause you to lose more body fluids.

*During hot weather, monitor the condition of family, friends and co-workers, and have someone do the same for you. During a heat wave, relatives and friends should call elderly people twice a day to ask how they're doing.
*Call 911 immediately if you suspect that you or someone else has had a heat stroke, marked by a high body temperature, a rapid pulse, dizziness, confusion, fatigue, headache, seizure and/or hot, dry skin that is flushed but not sweaty.

And remember that if you don't have air conditioning at home, the Warren library is the COOLEST place to be!!

On Friday, June 28th, eighty-three kids, parents, and caregivers celebrated Warren Township's summer kickoff with Pirate Mark and an afternoon of fun and magic. He amazed us with awesome illusions, Pedro the singing parrot, foam swords, and slinkys for everyone.

Summer reading begins with a “Splash”!

This summer the reading clubs at the Warren Library have a definite “splashy” feeling.

Warren Twp Library’s “SUMMER SPLASH” Reading Club for adults is under way. For the past nine years, the library has hosted a reading competition for adults designed to promote lifelong education through reading. Patrons may register at the Circulation Desk for this fun opportunity to win prizes, based on the number of books read. Audiobooks and e-books also count toward reading totals.
“MAKE A SPLASH @ THE LIBRARY”. Sign-ups for our children’s summer reading club begin on Monday, June 21 @ 9:30 am. Stop by the children’s desk to get your registration packet with information about rules and prizes. Children of all ages and abilities are invited to join us for a summer of splashy fun! Teens are also welcome to join their own summer reading club, “Make Waves @ Your Library”.
